Using the Filezilla Client with z/VM ==================================== 03/02/2017 John C. Miller Filezilla is a good quality free open source FTP client that can be used to transfer files to and from z/VM CMS and other filesystems. Setting up Filezilla to do this is not intuitive or straightforward. Here are some tips on using this FTP client with z/VM. 1) Only install Filezilla from the main filezilla site at: https://filezilla-project.org/ and do not pay for it, as it's completely free. 2) It is assumed that you are using a recent version of Filezilla, such as version 3.24.1, which was used for these notes. 3) It's assumed that you have a basic knowlege of how to use Filezilla. If not, use your favorite internet search engine to learn. 3a) Create a new site in Filezilla by clicking the Site Manger icon, and clicking the New Site button. Name it whatever you want. 3b) On the General Tab, enter the appropriate FTP settings, such as: Protocol: FTP Encryption: Only use Plain FTP Logon Type: Normal User: VM userid, such as MAINT, etc. Password: VM password for above userid. 3c) On the Advanced tab, enter these settings: Server Type: z/VM Default Local Directory: /MAINT.191 Note: Substitute the appropriate userid for MAINT above, and whatever the minidisc address is that you want to work with. 3d) On the Transfer Settings, enter these settings: Transfer Mode: Active Limit number of simultaneous connections: Checked Maximum number of connections: 1 4) Make sure that the z/VM userid that you are going to FTP to is not logged in. If logged on to MAINT you can determine the status of a userid by using the command: #CP Q U Note that if the userid you are going to FTP to is logged on to VM, then the FTP session will be forced to Read Only (RO) mode. This seems to be true regardless of how the users minidisc is defined in the z/VM directory. 5) Click the Connect button. You should see the contents of the selected minidisc displayed in the remote site window. 6) To change to another minidisc, enter the new minidisc in the Remote Site window in the format: /.mdiscaddress. For example, to work with the MAINT 193 disc, you would enter: /MAINT.193 the the Remote Site window, and press Enter. Note: The leading slash (/) is essential. This did not seem intuitive to me from reading the FIlezilla documentation. 7) YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary. This writeup is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to Filezilla, z/VM, FTP, or anything really. It is my own experience with using this tool, and it is submitted here in hope that it may be of use to you.
